The background to this directory constructed in the early 1990's by the late Ann Harrision then towards the end of her career as archivist and librarian of the Manx National Heritage Library, as part of a planned academic thesis, is given elsewhere - at that period, before digitisation of the Manx newspapers. it was a laborious task - subsequent work by many local historians has added to her original work. Her introductory chapters were condensed to provided the basis for her contribution to Volume 5 of the "New History of the Isle of Man" published in 2000 by Liverpool University Press.
I have in a few cases added Societies that for some reason she did not include but which have played a part in shaping Manx society.
