At a period of great interest in the religious life of the Manx people the Wesleyan Methodists of the Douglas Circuit, centred on the chapel in Thomas Street, Douglas, turned their missionary zeal away from the Island to the problem of the moral degradation of the Heathen and the work of the Wesleyan Missionary Society, founded in 1813.
In 1821 an appeal to the public for funds to support their force of 150 missionaries abroad 'with immediate pastoral care of more than 27,000 souls and more than four times that number who attend their ministerial instructions', was sent to the Duke of Atholl from the committee of the new Douglas Auxiliary society, and filed in his records on 13 November 1821.
