The Cumberland Pacquet of 3 January 1787 printed in its local news an account by its Douglas correspondent of the concert of sacred music, choral and instrumental, given at St. Matthew's chapel in Douglas by the musical society of the town on Christmas day, 1786. This is the only record of a society apparently of some accomplishment in contemporary English church music, and with a public following supported by 'the united applause of a very crowded and genteel audience many of whom promised to patronise and promote so agreeable and rational a part of Divine Worship.'
After Divine Service the members dined In their own music room in the company of the Minister and warden of St Matthew's, and 'a few other gentlemen who, at the same time were admitted honorary members of the society.' The lack of a newspaper printed in the Isle of Man at this time (copies of the Manx Mercury survive only from 1793) possibly leaves unrecorded the existence of a typically British association in a period of strong English influence in Government and in Society.
