A meeting 'held in the Court House in Castle Rushen, on Friday 6th of January, 1826, by appointment of his Honor the Lieutenant-Governor, for the purpose of taking into consideration the measure proposed by Sir William Hillary, Bart., for then forming the Isle of Man into a District Association of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, at which were present the Members of his Majesty's Council, Deemsters, House of Keys, and a most respectable assemblage of Naval and Military Officers and Gentlemen - His Honor the Lieut. Governor in the Chair' was the ceremonious occasion on which the Isle of Man was taken into membership of the association founded, under royal patronage,in 1824, by Sir William Hillary, a resident in the Island since 1808.
The resolutions of twelve notable Isiand personages, starting with Sir William Hillary himself and including Captain Quilliam of the Victory, Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar, were accepted as the constitution of the Isle of Man District to great acclaim, and a service of the utmost importance to the Island, considering 'the extremely dangerous nature of the coasts of the Isle of Man, and the frequency of Shipwreck thereon, but too often attended by the loss of many valuable lives', was set in motion in the place which inspired its purpose and where it was devised. The business of the meeting was printed in full as a broadsheet by the Manx Rising Sun office. The Island still benefits from the Lifeboat Institution which it continues to support in equal measure.
