This society appears to have beaten Leeds in the club race by two years, as the Philosophical and Literary Club there was founded in 1819. The probability is that announcements of the opening of the Manx society were more hopeful than solidly based.
The election of the Rev. Thomas Stephen, Vicar General and a writer of quaint doggerel verses in English (but also excellent verse in the Manx language), reported in the Manx Advertiser of 16 April 1818 brought forth no action and the last newspaper entry, published in the Manx Advertiser of 8 July 1819 was a notice of a meeting for members.
