The Mona's Herald of 16 March 1859, records the progress of the Douglas Protestant Society, ' recently established', which, 'now numbers 268 Members. A variety of periodicals and newspapers are taken in at their reading room, in Society lane'.
This society, dedicated to ' the assertion of protestantism' owed its foundation to the tension generated between Catholics and Protestants in Douglas in the anti-Catholic riots of November,1858, exacerbated by the growing numbers of the Roman Catholic population and consequently, the increasing activities of the Orange Order on the Island, the assimilation of the Isle of Man into the new Roman Catholic Diocese of Liverpool and, the last straw, the building of an imposing church, St. Mary's in the centre of the town.
