[from A.M Harrision's Descriptive List of Insular Societies]

(149) St. Matthews's Mutual Improvement Society, 1875-

Description

The syllabus for the term ending December 23rd 1901 reflects the masculine character of these clubs. All-male speakers, all-male committee and a preponderance of business and political subjects. Ladies were however invited to attend the meetings on 'Some old problems', 'Miscellaneous maxims', 'materialism', 'the benefits of life assurance', 'Indifference' and a smoking concert in December, an indication that attitudes were beginning to change.
