'King William's College Dramatic Society has existed for a longer period than any other similar organisation. It is not known when it originated, but in the first number of the Barrovian, dated 1st March, 1879, mention is made of the Histrionic Society's Christmas entertainment of the previous year,1878.
In the Barrovian of April 1880, a full account is given of the year's theatrical performances, which included scenes from "The Merchant of Venice'. Mr. Pleignier, a friend of the poet Brown, was the producer. Charles H. Gill was Shylock, S.H.W. Hughes-Games was Antonio and W.H.Bragg later Sir William Bragg was Bassanio. The farce "Turn him out' followed, and in this the Barrovian says "the whole life of the piece was Bragg, as Susan, the maid of all work.'
