An ad hoc. occasional committee elected at a prescriptive meeting of inhabitants of the town, convened by the High Bailiff, to provide food in time of distress at reasonable prices, or gratis, for the poor, by soliciting loans and donations. The report of the committee appointed on 25 March 1817, soliciting the help of the 4th Duke of Atholl, Governor of the Island, dated 3 April 1817, reports the total number (analysed) of men, women and children needing relief as 574, and loans and donations, under donors, totalling £678..8s...6d..
