(176) League of the Cross - 1890

Description

Father Nugent, the veteran Liverpool Catholic temperance reformer took part in a major, ecumenically organised, temperance lecture and entertainment at the Grand Theatre, Douglas, reported in the Isle of Man Examiner of 29 March 1890. The establishment of a branch of the teetotal Roman Catholic temperance society, the League of the Cross, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic mission, Douglas, was also publicised The society, which accepted pledges of total abstinence for life, or, on the advice of Cardinal Manning, its founder, for one year, claimed 199 members on the Island.:
