xxxA report on the activities of this society, backed by the evidence of a year's financial statement, was published free for the society in the Mona's Herald of 17 December 1853. The object of the society founded in 1851 and run by an all-female committee and two female officers was to provide paid winter work in plain needlework for the unemployed of St. George's parish. The goods made were sold to the general public at cost price and to the poor recommended by a St. George's District Visitor at a discount.
Having been found to be 'a valuable adjunct' to the all-male District Visiting Society and to have worked well 'as a check on pauperism' and to have proved 'A test of character amongst the poor' the society was to make a general collection in aid of its project in order to carry on its operations.
The working committee of eleven, and the Treasurer and Secretary, still confined to a very traditional and therefore suitable area of women's work were women of good famliy with affiliations to St. George's church. .
