The Manx Sun of 7 February 1846 announced the formation of a Ramsey Literary Society for gentlemen. Members, to be elected by ballot, met in a private room for fortnightly meetings when various topics, with the exception of politics and religion, would be discussed. One visitor per member could be taken to the Reading Room where newspapers and periodicals were made available by the Committee of Management.
The annual subscription for a gentleman in the town was 20s., for a gentleman in the country 10s., and ladies introduced by members could attend lectures free. The members of the committee of management were the Rev. Dr. Buck, Messrs Clucas, Wynyard, Callister, and Barklay.
