'The Ramsey Wesleyan North Shore-road, Young Men's Mutual was started in the winter of 1895. There are about eighteen members. We have been fortunate in the past two years to have a lady president who really has been the mainstay of the association. A few of our topics have been 'Ancient Civilization', 'Cycling', 'Physical Culture', 'A few things worth knowing' by the president, 'Mahomet', 'Temperance', 'Socialism', 'The evils of strife and contention, 'What benefits Society most - the Spendthrift or the miser', 'Books', 'Education', 'Can England feed herself', 'The Natural History of the Bible', 'The Duke of Wellington', 'President Garfield', and 'Duty'. We have had one or two social gatherings, and in the summer of last year we had a splendid drive to Laxey Glen Gardens, thus keeping the association together during the summer months. Perhaps, unlike our kindred societies, we resolved to put 'Physical Culture' into practical shape, and have started a football club for the mutual benefit of our physical bodies.'
This report was published in the Isle of Man Examiner of 10 April 1897 as an annual return to the Conference of Debating Societies of the work of local Mutual Improvement and Debating societies.
