A group of local amateurs, with occasional professionals, gave theatrical performances of popular plays, humourous interludes and songs, from January to June 1862 in the Theatre Royal for the support of local charities. Their title was ironic - the company had nothing to do with Shakespeare and everything to do with contemporary popular entertainment.
