'The ninth session of this guild has been one of the most successful as regards papers and debates, and with one exception, the programme was carried out.
The following is the list of papers read:-

'A Famous Peel Boy - Philip Christian, clothworker', Mr. J.K. Leece;

'Five Hundred Miles on a Bicycle', Mr. E.U. Savage.Our chief aim is to make this guild a club for young men. The rooms are open every evening except Sundays, from November to March, with a good supply of newspapers and games. We have tried as far as possible to arrange a debate or paper for the Monday of each week and have been fairly successful. ' .F. Nicholson, Honorary Secretary.'
This report was published in the Isle of Man Examiner of 10 April 1897 as an annual return to the Conference of Debating Societies of the work of local Mutual Improvement and Debating Societies. [The Guild was affiliated to the Young Men's Friendly Society and members who left Douglas for any large English town were entitled to all the benefits of that institution.]
