Cubbon's Bibliography vol. ii, (1939), is the partly unreferenced source for the activities of the Gentlemen Amateurs of Douglas who gave performances at the New Theatre, Athol Street from 1823 -1825. After a short break they started again and were still in performance in 1852 when their charitable payments, the profits of their performances after the subtraction of expenses, were refused by three very respectable objects of charity, the House of Industry, the Sailors' Home and the Ladies Soup Dispensary, because the amateur actors issued no proper accounts.
This controversy was pursued in leisurely affectation in the columns of the Manx Sun on 20 March and 17 April 1852. Cubbon gives no references after this date.
