The proceedings of the inaugural dinner of this craft association, held at the Talbot Hotel, Athol Street, Douglas, were reported in the Isle of Man Examiner of 22 February 1890. The objects of the association, described by Mr. Newby, the Secretary, were 'The furtherance and improvement in the art of printing, the maintenance of good feeling and harmony between employer and employed and provision against sickness, old age and other useful purposes'. Two thirds of the trade in England were in the association, yet out of £80,000 of funds raised only £10,000 had been spent in strike pay. The association's business was not to encourage strikes, but rather to prevent them by mediating betwixt men and employers.
After a succession of amicable toasts,
The employers responded to by S.K.Broadbent, the editor of the Isle of Man
Examiner,
'The Branch officials', and
'The town and Trade of Douglas' the meeting concluded with songs and recitations.
