The Mona's Herald of 12 January, 1859, recorded that'a new benefit lodge for sickness and support in interment of the dead opened in Castletown by Brother Ashbrook in connexion with the Grand Protestant Association of loyal Orangemen. At the same time a goodly number of candidates were proposed and seconded for admission next lodge night'.
In this period of serious anti-Catholic clashes and demonstrations consequent on the establishment of the Roman Catholic Hierarchy in England and Wales, and in particular the absorption of the Isle of Man into the diocese of Liverpool and the building of St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Douglas, the strict Protestantism of the Orange order was possibly an added attraction for the men of Castletown in search of collective mutuality insurance.
