Re: Brew / JOUGHIN Andreas
In Response To: Re: Brew / JOUGHIN Andreas ()

Hello again Robert,

Thank you for the additional information about your family. My records mostly agree with yours about John Joughin from the Leodist family - however please note that D.S. Dugdale (Andreas property expert) wrote "Lettis or Ballalettis is not the same place as Leodist but is next door. Ballalettis is part of West Ballacunner in the treen of Leodist, not Alia Leodist.
The entry for Philip JOUGHIN [b.1770] suggests that at the time he was born the family had moved to Ballabyragh, which is on the east side of Smeal, two miles away from Lettice."

I have:
John JOUGHIN 1716-1788 of Leodest/Leodist/Lettis/Loodesh married:
1. Joney CRENIL/Crenilt 10 May 1740; she died 6 Oct.1750, following the birth of 2nd daughter Catherine 11 days earlier [25 Sept.1750]. Eldest daughter was Joney. “Loodesh 1750… Her two daughters namely Joney & Catherine Joughin joint Adminrs… John Camaish, Thos Corlett Husband of Cath Camaish & Alice Camaish the next relations by the father’s side, with Wm Tear, Phil Tear & Mitchel Tear, the nearest relations by the mother’s side are appointed overseers of the minors… their father John Joughin sworn.. Pledges are Philip Brew & Wm Joughin both of KK Andrews…”

The two daughters of John JOUGHIN & Joney CRENIL:
[1] Joney
[2] Catherine “Catherine Daughter of John Joughin (Lettice) had private baptism 25 Sept. & was received into the Church 30 Sept.” [Andreas, 1750]

Eldest daughter Joney married [1] John SAYLE [2] John CORLETT
[Northside Sales Andreas May 1768 John Sayle & Joney Joughin Contract no.18]
“John Sayle & Joney Joughin both of this parish were married in this Church by License by & with the consent of John Joughin Father of said Joney Joughin this 22 Jan 1763…
John Sayle X
Joney Joughin X
In presence of Nich Cowley Parish Clerk
William Cleator farmer”

[John Sayle was from the Ballakeyll family, whose son William b.1766, heir to Ballakeyll, was born after his father had died. The son is wrongly given as John in Lezayre Court 1766 but correctly as William in Maughold Court 1772. (D.S. Dugdale)]

John SAYLE 1766-2 [Andreas Arch 76 LDS film 0106224. See: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/twill/1766_003.html]

Younger daughter Catherine Joughin in a deed dated 1799/1800 leaves everything to her sister Jony Corlett [these were the two daughters of John Joughin and Joney Crenill].

John JOUGHIN 1716-1788 married 2. Ann JOUGHIN bapt.9 May 1731, dau. of Charles JOUGHIN and Mary CLEATER (I also have the CLEATER ancestry if you are interested?).
Ann Joughin als Joughin was buried Andreas 25 Feb 1785. I have this will but must have forgotten to transcribe it when I did the others.
John's will is at: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/twill/1789_014.html

The four children of John JOUGHIN & Ann JOUGHIN were:
[1] John 1755-1818 [marr. Joney KILLIP] uncle guardian to his sister Alice Brew's underage children in 1799. “John son of John Joughin and Ann Joughin bapt May ye 7th 1755”
“John Joughin & Joney Killip both of this parish were married in this Church by licence this 6 Nov 1779 by me W: Mylrea Rector
John Joughin my mk X
Joney Joughin late Killip my mk X
In the presence of Wm Radcliffe Parish Clerk, John Tear Junr Smeale”

6. Thomas JOUGHIN b.1793
7. Hannah JOUGHIN b.1795 marr.1815 Robert COWLE
8. William JOUGHIN 1798-99.

[2] Ann b.1760 marr. Philip FARGHER, also guardian. [Philip Fargher d.1807, will to dau. Leonora, son James, dau. Ann, son Simon.] “Ann Daughter of John Joughan & Ann Joughan bapt Sepr 17 1760”

“Philip Fargher & Ann Joughin both of this parish were married in this Church by licence by & with the consent of John Joughin father of said Ann Joughin 2 Dec 1780….”

[3] Alice b.1764 buried Andreas ['of Jurby'] 10 Dec.1799, married Patrick BREW 17 Jan.1785, five BREW children: Patrick 1786-1864 [Lezayre]; John 1788-1849 [Ramsey]; George 1790-1832 [farmer of Bride, bur. Jurby]; Anne b.1792; Elisabeth 1798-1854 marr. Charles Sayle].
“Alice Daughter of John Joughin Lettis, baptized 30 March 1764”
“Patrick Brew & Alice Joughin both of this parish were married in this Church by licence 17 Jan 1785….”
Patrick Brew X

[These entries follow each other in the Andreas parish register.]
"~~~ Daur of Philip Joughin buried 28th 99" [assume Oct.] 1799
“~~~ Daur of Philip Joughin buried 11th Novr 99”
“~~~ Son of Patrick Brew buried 21st Novr 99”
“~~~ Son of Patrick Brew buried 24th Novr 99”
“Alice Brew als Joughin buried 10th Decr 99”

Alice BREW als JOUGHIN [1800 Jurby Epis.will LDS film no.0106407 See: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/twill/1800_003.html
N.B. There are two errors in the will. Alice Brew als Joughin is recorded in the Andreas burial register as buried 10th December 1799 [not August], and the brother of father Patrick Brew was either Philip or John – not Thomas. Thomas Brew was a cousin.

[4] Philip b.1770 marr. Christian Lace?
“Philip son of John & Anne Joughin (Ballabyragh) bapt 25th July 1770”.

This is all I had about him when I wrote this, because I don't think he was married in Andreas. The IGI has an extracted marriage (from the parish register) for Philip Joughin & Christian Lace on 19 Nov.1791 at Kirk German.

Someone might kindly look it up for us in the MM.

Sue
