Re: Frederick Brew
In Response To: Re: Frederick Brew ()

Hello Robert,

I don't think there is any conflicting information (except his age in one census), about Frederick Brew having been bapt 24 March 1867 in Maughold.

The well-known Brew researcher J.A. Brew wrote "Frederick Brew was born in 1867, educated at King William College, a Bank Manager in Ramsey".

His grandfather John BREW was baptised in Andreas on 6 July 1788, married Alice E[A]NNETT, and was buried in Ramsey in 1849, aged 62. He received 10 shillings in his father's 1833 will. Their children were:
Christiana, baptised in Lezayre 11 December 1808.
John, baptised 8 September 1816, died 1879, farmer and butcher of Ramsey who married Catherine KENNISH. They had 10 children, with some bapt in Ramsey, and others in Maughold (including Frederick), while they were living in Ramsey.
William, baptised in Ramsey 23 August 1818.
Catherine, baptised in Ramsey 5 November 1820.
Ann, baptised in Ramsey 19 March 1826.
Mary
Margaret Elizabeth

1841 Census: Port-e-Vullen Village, Maughold, John BREW, Ag. Lab., aged 60, with wife Alice, aged 55, son John, aged 23, daughters Cathrine, aged 19 and Ann, aged 13, all born on the Isle of Man, and Elizabeth, aged 5, born in England.

1851 Census: Ballure Road, Ramsey, Alice BREW, Head, widow, aged 66, born Douglas, son John, married, aged 34, butcher, born Ramsey and his wife Catherine, aged 28, Alice’s daughter Catherine, unmarried, aged 30, born Maughold, and granddaughter Catherine, aged 1, born Maughold.

1861 Census: Ballure Road, Ramsey, Beach Cottage, Alice BREW, aged 70, with Catherine, daughter, unmarried, aged 30 [sic]. Alice was buried in Ramsey in 1864, aged 79. Catherine married Thomas CALLOW in 1867.

John Brew of Ramsey (1788-1849) left a combined will with his wife Alice. The assets weren't distributed until after Alice's death in 1864. The "updated" information on the children shows eldest daughter Christian HOLDEN was in Buffalo, New York; Mary COWLE was married to Robert COWLE - her second marriage. Her first marriage was to ANDERSON; Margaret T?urton, previous marriage to T?raves [difficult to read]; Elizabeth PROUDFOOT; Ann SAYLE married to William SAYLE of Maughold; Catherine Brew was left the house they had recently [in 1849] bought in Kirk Maughold Street in Ramsey, commonly known as "John Sayle's house".

If you are interested in more of his ancestors please see this website: brew.clients.ch/BrewJurby.htm#Jurby. Look for the parents of John Brew baptised in Andreas 6 July 1788 (from the top of this message), who were:
4. Patrick BREW, baptised 1751, married Alice JOUGHIN [1764-1799] of Andreas, on 17 January 1786. - And go back further from Patrick Brew in the same database. I also have details of this Joughin ancestry from Andreas.
