Wesleyan Methodist Local Preachers, 1775-1850

Note these names are mostly taken from minute books or circuit plans preserved in the Manx Museum - if the LP is known to have belonged to the Ramsey/Peel circuit this is shown otherwise Douglas/Castletown.

Please note that this time period also means that many of the well known personalities on Manx Methodism are excluded as they only appeared on plan after 1850. I will extend this page to cover the rest of the 19th Century but at present have enough work in handling these!

Two key references from Manx Museum are:

md10097 = notes of meetings between Manx and English (ie the travelling) preachers started in 1788 and then continued to c.1830 (though I think the final 20 years are Northside only) - contains a list of LPs

ms1620c = minute book of Douglas Circuit LP meetings 1833-1888; at the start and again at end (but two lists not identical) are lists of LP's used to note attendances at meetings - the first names are those on plan in 1833 others are added over next few years (this scheme seems to stop c.1838) the dates of entry are shown "e.1833"

Plans are:
1813 - (a copy of which was issued towards end of 19th C as a souvenir) Note in this plan Douglas LPs start at no 5 and Ramsey preachers start at no 44, thus no. 44 is actually equal in seniority to no. 5 but are in different circuits. (Numbers 1-4 were the travelling preachers whose names always head any Plan)
1843 - General Plan for Wesleyan Preachers - effectively two plans side by side one for Southside and other for Northside (the issue of this double plan seems to have been common) - note that the high plan-numbers of Ramsey preachers on this plan are because they follow in sequence (starting at #48) those of the Douglas/Peel circuit.

Rosser gave a list of those appearing on the 1848 double plan (of which no copy is known though John Rylands have a Ramsey/Peel circuit plan for 1848) with an indication of the language (English or Manx) in which the LP preached.

Entries under Notes:
year n (do) place = entry on plan for year, n = number on plan (measure of 'status' of LP), (do/ry) indicates that Douglas/Castletown or Ramsey/Peel circuit (1843) place = place at which the LP belongs to some class
c18x1 = census entry for 1841, 1851 etc
other comments from LP minute books as referenced above.

Suspect two LP's of same name, father & son - father Robert Gelling. However there is also a Robert Gelling, cartwright, of Douglas LP with the primitive Methodists about the same period.
Memorial Inscription Braddan Old Yard "Robert Gelling of Ballaoates in this Parish, Paper Manufacturer, who was for many years a local Preacher in the Methodist Connection. He fell asleep in Jesus 20th March 1849 aged 47 years"

Presume also M. Summers who Cubbon (Bib p1168) said was Chemist with premises in Parliament St Ramsey - not in 1863 Thwaites

"[He] was a local preacher among the Wesleyans, and might often be heard hurling anathemas from a country pulpit at the very Church whose bread he subsisted on, and whose services he assisted in daily. Even this assistance was rendered in an eccentric manner, as for instance when he descended from his clerkly seat to poke the fire whilst he conducted the singing of the hymns."
