Re: John Cain(e) 1852
In Response To: Re: John Cain(e) 1852 ()

Diane, I have been puzzling over your information about the John Cain who married Elizabeth Creech. When you wrote about his "age on his marriage certificate indicated that he had been born in 1853 with a father named John" did you mean the John who married Sarah Maxwell? Is there any reason to think that his age in the 1911 census record you gave (b.c.1847) was more accurate than his age on his marriage cert (b.1853)? And how do these two years lead to the John Cain who married Elizabeth Creech?

Where you wrote that there was only one John Cain son of John in 1847 who must be the right person are you referring to the John Cain bapt 21 Feb.1847 in Onchan, with father John and mother Margt? (IGI extracted record.)

John Cain & Elizabeth Creech had a son William bapt 29 Nov.1846 Sulby, which makes it unlikely that he had a brother bapt early in 1847. The John Cain who Donna found aged 2 in the 1851 Maughold census was b.Maughold according to this census, and aged 12 b. Ramsey in 1861, so b.c.1849. Probably John bapt Maughold 29 June 1849 son of John Cain & Elizth [no surname given, but almost certainly Creetch]. There were few John Cains in Maughold and no others at that time with a wife Elizabeth.

The John J Cain (b.c.1847) in the 1911 census was born in Braddan, widower, aged 64, a farmer living in Baldhoon Lonan with his two daughters - not with his wife Sarah. Daughters were Sarah 28 and Margaret 26, both single and both b.Lonan. The return was signed John Joseph Cain, Baldhoon, Lonan.

This could be Sarah b.10 Nov 1879 Ramsey daur of John Cain & Sarah Maxwell with a few years lopped off her age. I can't see Margaret, but there were several other children of John Cain & Sarah Maxwell in Brian's births index.

However I don't think this John Cain in 1911 b.Braddan could possibly be John son of Elizabeth Creech.
Or have I missed something?

Sue
