Thanks for your reply Donna, it is much appreciated. Both census returns put John as being born 1849 so I will need to look further. The 1881 census shows a John Caine living in Barrow-in-Furness with his parents John and Jane Caine. I know that he spent his time between the IOM and BIF as my grandmother, his daughter, described her childhood to me. I don't know for certain that this is him but it is a possibility.
