much of this was also anti-Irish - they were of course competing for jobs and many Island communities were (still are ?) distrustful of immigrants - it only takes few with strongly expressed hostility to cause problems - eg the ground for Peel's RC church was bought by a coal merchant supposedly to build his yard then passed to the Church as they knew if they bid openly for it certain individuals would outbid them - there were some demos re opening of St Marys in Douglas but even the newspaper suggested they were the work of a few.
