Redhead family Arbory, Malew, Rushen
In Response To: Re: costain cain kermode kneen ()

Peter, I thought you might be interested in 2 items I came across while looking through my Costain, Kermode, Gawne folder. It's about your Redhead family.

A cousin had been looking at Kentraugh Gawne material at the Manx Museum, and she sent me photocopies of some of the items. One of those items is a photo of servants on the front steps of Kentraugh House, and it's dated 1867. The labelling is difficult to read but one of the names is Redhead. On first inspection, it looks as though it says "Maggie Redhead"---however, in the context of the rest of the names, some of the servants were referred to by surname only, so I think it's "Maggie" and "Redhead", meaning Tom Redhead, groom.

This is an attempt at a transcription:

1867
some of the servants
Old Tom ? Isabella Cannell
Mary ? Clarke, Old A---
Hawkins, Mrs Turnbull, Anne Gale
Margt Q or 2, Maggie Redhead
Ritchie, Mary Q ?
Scamp ??? (there are 2 dogs)

I've looked back at relevant census pages, trying to identify some of the servants, and can post what I've found if anyone's interested.

The second photo is a picture of a man in uniform with a dog, standing beside an elegant young lady sitting on a white horse. On the back it says:

"Isalen J Gawne
1864 on Father's old gig mare "Mona" aged 20
Tom Redhead and "Taffy"
Kentraugh front door"

I've looked for Thomas Redhead's baptism in the IGI and can't find an entry. I'm wondering whether he might be a son of your James Redhead b 1802. Did this James have a first marriage to Eleanor Clucas circa 1824. The IGI has these children:

1. ANN REDHEAD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 10 OCT 1830 Malew, Isle Of Man, England

2. ELIZTH ANN REDHEAD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 30 OCT 1825 Malew, Isle Of Man, England

3. ELEANOR REDHEAD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 10 OCT 1830 Malew, Isle Of Man, England

4. ELLEN REDHEAD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 08 SEP 1828 Saint Marys, Castletown, Isle Of Man, England

There's a big enough gap between Ellen Sept 1828 and Eleanor + Anne (twins ?) Oct 1830 to fit in a Thomas circa 1829 which would fit with his ages in the censuses, and at his burial in 1912. It would also fit the "born Castletown / Malew" on several censuses. I'm guessing that Eleanor died in 1831, and then James married Esther Harrison in 1832 and had a large family, born in Rushen and Castletown.

I'm curious to know whether I've guessed correctly or not.
