I believe I can shed some light on "The Builder Caines" For my own idiosyncrasy, make that sanity I spell Caine always & ignore the alternate spellings.
Robert Caine 1788-1866 Braddan & Ann Christian
1788-1872 were the parents of "The Builder Caines"

Robert 1827-1912 Builder & Mary(possibly Siddon)1829-1885
his son Robert Edward Caine 1850-1894 was the father of Robert James the Shanghai river pilot who was father of Major Robert Caine
I don't see them in the 1881 census and don't find Robert James in the IGI so I'm not certain who is mother was.
By 1891 RE is married to Anna Siddon who is the mother of Mary Christian, Elisie May, Alice Louisa who we find in the 1891 Census
There is another son Ernest Arthur 19 (1872)who was b England so maybe he & RJ have the same mother??
