The only reason I can think of such an early marriage (17 or just 18 for a male - generally such married in mid 20's) is that the farm needed an heir but even in 1740 a 17yr old had a reasonable expectation of life - possibly he married into money ? or maybe the family situation was bad.
However the age at death and a long marriage does seem to agree with the identification
