Information for Eric Gelling

Hi Eric:

I have done more digging around for the Gelling’s and have come up with the following, you may already have these names but if not, hope you may be able to add to your collection.

On the IGI – could John Gelling 1680(82?) – 1736 M 1715 to Ann Moore 1688 – 1748 be the parents of JG 1722? There is a will on Brian Lawsons’ website for Ann Moore.

John Gelling 1722 – 1812 M 1739 Catharine Killey 1712 – 1806
Children of JG and CK
John 1740- 1829 M 1763 Margaret Quilliam 1740 – 1822 Marown

Children of JG and MQ:
John 1764 Philip 1766 Margaret 1769

John 1764 - 1854 M: Isabella Cavendish 1765 – 1856
Children of JG and IC:
John 1790 Robert 1791 William 1794 Thomas 1799x Margaret 1801 Sarah 1803 Isabella 1805 Richard 1807 James 1810

William 1794 - 1854 M: 1816 Margaret Quine 1793 – 1862
Children of WG and MQ:
William 1817 Robert 1819 Elizabeth Margaret 1821 Margaret 1823 John 1824 Edward 1826 James 1829 Henry 1832 Jane 1831 Jane married (1st) John Callow 1853 (2nd) Edward Chadwick Thomas 1835 - 1848

Elizabeth Margaret 1821 - 1867 M: 1847 Robert Kelly 1822 – 1870 is my direct maternal line. Which is yours Eric?

To possibly go back a generation further that John Gelling and Ann Moore, there is, on Ancestry, the parents of this John Gelling who could be John Gelling DOB abt 1655 – 1732, married abt 1680 to Margaret Kneale abt 1655 - ?? There is a will on BL’s DB for this John.

In your posting December 22 2007 (9.18 pm) you stated that you thought your ancestors’ brother John Gelling married Catherine Killey married 1739 with a son John 1740. As shown above I think that Cath Killey was married to the John Gelling 1722 – 1812.

In your posting of November 8 2007 (9.00 am) you mentioned that Isabella married Philip Shimmin, it would also appear on Ancestry that Sarah 1803 married a John Shimmin and had 9 children – quite possibly brothers. Also in this posting you said that we didn’t know the parentage of John Gelling 1764 – 1854, I am confident that John Gelling and Margaret Quilliam are his parents.

I obtained the wills of John Gelling and Catherine Killey which is a joint will. Mentioned are several children and the other one is for John Gelling and Margaret Quilliam which also mentions several of their children. This will was submitted by their son Thomas. Both of these wills are now on Brian Lawson’s website and any comments you may have Eric, would be most welcome to help clear up more of the Gelling family and both wills are well worth a read. It would appear overall, that the Gelling’s had longevity on their side. The only thing I am minutely unsure about is that the will of John Gelling 1740 – 1829 doesn’t mention a wife but I am 99% sure that Margaret Quilliam was his wife.

They are all Braddan except where otherwise stated.

Marg
