Thanks, Donna - yes I totally agree about the number of Matt Cains which I thought was a relatively unusual name.

The only problem with the 93 year-old in 1857 was that he didn't look like the 67 year-old in the 1841 census who had William in the same household - but this is certainly the one who married Margaret Quark. Thanks to your MI one puzzle is sorted!
