Just to add a little more. I have the first part of a will of Edith Ann Cowle father who was John Cowell dated 1908. In it he states the following:

I John Cowell 8 thorn hill (just of Shaw Brow) Douglas 14th December 1908
I hereby revoke all wills by me here for made I appoint my son William Thomas Cowell

I hereby give and bequeath unto Harriet Rebecca Forshaw £1
Edith Ann Cowell my daughter £1
Lydia Cain my grand daughter £1
Alice Clarke my grand daughter £1

I leave all the rest of which I am to my executor my son William Thomas Cowell.

The Alice that he mentions is Alice Maude Mary Cowell the daughter of Edith Ann Cowell birth 1886 Douglas. I did not find a father for her, Lydia Cain is also Edith Ann Cowell’ daughter but she was not a Cain when born she was Lydia Cowell birth 1889. I also did not find a father for her.

JOHN Cowell passed away 1909-1910

Notice he did leave any thing in the will for Edith and John, son of Robert Henry Cain

The only marriage that is showing for John Cain and Edith Cowell is the 1917 one and it says:

Edith: father John (deceased) and John: father Robert (deceased) a carter.
