What regiment was he Lieutenant of - if it was a local militia then he could well have had a career elsewhere.
Have you checked in UK National Archives for any possibility - he would have had to have come from a reasonably well off family as commissions were bought in those days - also is there any other 'proof' he was 70 and not say 60?
