Sue, I think you missed the date "2 Feb 1779:" that precedes the part you quoted in the first part of your message. That date fits well to involve Thomas Looney b 1748, s/o John Looney & Margt Kelvie.

We now know Thomas was a shoemaker and his father was a hatmaker. John must have made fine hats to have done so well.

I do not agree with Averil that John the hatmaker was born 1687 s/o John Looney & Margery Woods , but I've covered that elsewhere. Right now, his origin is a big question mark.
