Eric, this contract shows how the Cannells came to own Ballafayle y Cannell, when John Cannell married Christin (b.1721) the "eldest daughter and heiress" of William Christian and Margaret Corkill. Margaret Corkill was daughter of Peter Corkill & Joney Quirk.

Articles of marriage Agreed and Concluded
upon by and betwixt William Christian of
Balla: Faile in the parish of KK Maughold for and
in the behalf of his Son William on the one pt
And Peter Corkill of the parish of KK Bradan, with
the Consent of his wife Jony Corkill for and in the
behalf of their daughter Margt Corkill on the other
pt as followeth /

(1st) It is concluded and agreed upon betwixt the parties aforesaid that
the sd William and Margt shall proceed into the Holy estate of Matri-
mony at or abt the 10th of this Month, God and his Church permitting

(2) It is agreed upon that the sd William the Father doth now at present
Settle upon his sd Son the sd William and the sd Margt his intended wife
all his Estate of Lands Tenements Buildings and Holdings in Balla Faile
aforesd, with what other Lands he has in his present possession and the whole
Crop of Corn Now in the Haggard to be [fold in paper] the Festival
of All: Hallowtide Next immediately ensuing. They the sd William
and Margt thenceforward maintaining the sd William the Father in Com
petent Meat, Drink, Apparell, Bedding, Washing, and all other Necessa~
ties, as becometh During his Naturall Life, as also paying and Discharg
ing the Lords Rent and all suits and services incumbent on the Said
Estate /

(3) It is concluded upon that the sd Peter Corkill with the Allowance
and Consent of his wife do promise and oblige themselves to give
in Marriage Dowry, with his sd Daughter, to the sd William the one half
of his Team of Oxen and Husbandry Gears in present possession
and the other half of the Team and Husbandry Gears of all sorts
att and after the Decease of the sd Peter, and the sd Jony his wife
or the longer liver of them, a Dozen of sheep (including her own
in the Number) a heiffer of three years old and a young mair of two years
some bedcloaths half the small vessels and half of an Iron Pott. /

(4) Fourthly it is concluded upon that the sd William the Son and
Margt his intended wife do oblige themselves their heirs and
Executors to give unto their said Father the sd Peter Corkill and
the sd Jony his wife the whole benefitt use and proffit of half
the within Mentioned Estate of BallaFaile & Dureing the Natu=
rall life of the sd Peter and his sd wife, or the survivor of them
with half the use and benefit of the Crops of Corn given by Wm
the Father, And this in regard the sd young Couple are not
Capable of Manageing the Same themselves; They the sd Peter
and wife, and the young Couple working and and manageing the sd
Tenemt betwixt them; paying the Lds Rent and all other
Encumbrances Equally and Makeing provision for the sd William
Christian the Father at Equall Expenses in Manner as within
Mentioned Dureing his Naturall life and enjoying all proffits
Equally also, they the sd Peter and Jony to Leave the whole Crop of
Corn etc in the sd Tenemt after their Decease. /

(5) Fifthly it is agreed upon that whereas there is a parcell of the
Tenemt aforesd Under the Encombrance of five pounds, or there –
abts the sd Peter and wife do oblige themselves to Discharge the
sd Sume and after Redemption the proffits thereof to be Common
betwixt them and the young Couple During the lives of the sd
Peter and wife, and after their Decease the young Couple their
heirs and Exrs paying the Sum of two pounds and ten shills
to the Exrs of the sd Peter and his wife, if they Charge them with
the same in their Last Wills.

To the performance of all the promisses all parties concerned
have obliged themselves in the penalty of fourty pounds in the
nature of all Fines, Witness yr Subscriptions or Names & Marks this

Articles of marriage Condescended unto Concluded and agre
= ed upon by and between William Christian of Ballafail in the
parish of KK Maughold, and Margrett, his wife in the behalf of Christian
their Eldest Daughter & Heiress on ye one part, and John
Cannel of KK Lonnan in his own behalf on the other part
as follows,
Imps. It is Covenanted and agreed upon by the above parties
that the aforenamed young couple vizt. John Cannel and
Christian ChristianShall Enter into the holy Estate of
matrimony at or before ye ffeast of St. luke the Evangelist
[at] next Ensueing ye Date hereof God an Holy Church permitting

2.ly It is Concluded and agreed upon that the sd. William Christian
and Margtt. his wife do Settle upon, and give unto their afforesd.
Daughter Christian, and her intended husband, the one half of
their whole Estate of Ballafail, in present possession, as well _
quarter Land, as Intack, and also half the Team vizt. three
Beasts, with all their husbandry Gears and Utensils, and a [Colt];
And this Crop to be Equally between them, and to seed the Ground
with the same, and the young Couple to receive and Enjoy the
Rent
Ensueing Crop after seeding; and to pay the Lords ^ [for] *………..*
= ing; and also what Interest is already due to John Callow _
And the said William Christian and margret his wife to have
and receive the fifth part of Corn & Hay, with the [Graising]
of a Cow and a horse Dureing the natural life of the sd. Wm.
& Margret or the Longest liver of them, they seeding a fifth
part of the Corn, and pay yearly a fifth part of ye Lords {Rent]
and they are also to have a spaides cutting of turfe in ye Curraugh

3.ly And for as much as the other half of the aforesd. Estate wth. half
the crop, Team, and husbandry Gears are in the possession of
Jony Corkil alias Quirk Relict of Peter Corkil late deceas’d
further (in fold of document) she ye sd. Jony
Enjoys During her natural life, by virtue of a Contract
bearing Date ye 5th of Octobr. 1719 as more at large ………
by the sd. Contract ____ It is concluded and agreed upon
The aforesd. William Christian and Margt. his wife Do her….
give and Settle that same half on their said daughter and
her intended husband at the sd. Joney’s Decease, or relinguishing
with … the sd. Half of Crop, Team, & husbandry Gears; [then] upon
ye Receipt of wch. ye young Couple is to pay two pounds ten shill
as required by ye afforesd. Contract. And the affords. Wm. & Marg
to Enjoy a fifth part of ye Crop of Corn & hay wth. ye grasing o..
another Cow & horse as Specified in fore going Article ___
and have also reserved a house and Garden to themselfes

4/ It is further Concluded and agreed upon, that if it please
God to bless ye sd William with a son to Inherit ye sd. Estate
that then and in that case, the afforesd. young couple is to
hold and Enjoy the Estate wth. crop, Team, and husbandry __
Gears, as specifyed in the foregoing Articles until the son
And Heir arrives to the age of twenty one years; at the __
[Lapiration] of wch. time ye son to pay unto the sd. young Couple
the sum of twenty pounds sterl ; five pounds ten shills. __
being an Incumbrance on ye Estate already; And upon
the fect of the sd. twenty pounds the afforesd. young Couple
viz. Christian Christian and her sd. intended husband is to leave
and acquit ye sd. Estate, wth. Crop, Team, & husbandry Gear
wth.

Lastly And for the true and faithfull performance of all the
foregoing Articles and agreements all the afforenamed parties
do : bind and oblige themselves in the penalty and forfeiture
of Sixty pounds Sterl to be levyed & paid in the nature of
all such fines & forfeitures within this Isle as wittness
their Subscriptions this Eleventh day of September one
thousand seven hundred and fourty one ___
