Re: John Edward Corkill of Maughold

I must have been blind to have missed those burials. I probably accidentally brought up the wrong surname.

I noticed in your last note that the 1887 marriage of John Edward Corkill had his father as James (not John) and the age was high for burial to be one of the ca 1860 JEC's, so I went into detective mode to figure it out. It seems there was a slightly older 3rd John Edward Corkill of Maughold, and the one you've provided is the one baptized 31 Aug 1851 s/o James Corkill & Ann. I didn't check who the parents are, but I found JEC and wife Frances in 1911 census at Sycamore Cottage, Lewaigue, Maughold with 3 of their children Margaret 23, Walter 18 & James 14 (5 born, 4 living).

I then sleuthed about to see who the other JEC b 1860 s/o John Corkill & Ann Corkill was. Turns out he fits right into your family, ie. father John (1810-1889) was the son of Peter Corkill Jr (1772-1823) & Eleanor Corkill, md 6 Jan 1798 Maughold and g/s of Peter Corkill Sr (ca 1740-1822) & Jane Corkill md 6 Oct 1771 Maughold (2 more Corkill-Corkill marriages!).

John Corkill md Ann Corkill 27 Jan 1855 Maughold, and he was a widower father Peter Corkill, she was single father William Corkill. His first wife would be Margaret Corlett, md 23 Nov 1833 Maughold, she was buried 13 Jul 1851 age 39 so she just made the 1851 census (she was 37 b German). I counted 7 children from the first marriage, after I pulled out the children from a different earlier John Corkill - Margaret Corlett marriage. John and his second wife Ann had 7 also. John matches to the Maughold burial 25 Jun 1889 and the will that Adrienne provided in a separate stream "John Corkill several wills" (thank you Adrienne, great timing too!).
Ann Corkill is in 1891 & 1901 census's as a widow and not 1911 so she probably is the burial 14 Feb 1905 age 75. BTW, her ages in the census's are ridiculous; from 1861 to 1901 she is 36, 34, 47, 60, 65 and burial age 1905 is 75. I haven't checked for her earlier per-marriage census's yet.

John Edward age 30 married Ann Jane Kinrade age 25 (d/o John Kinrade) 5 Apr 1890 Maughold. In 1891 he is listed as the next entry below his mother, married age 30 farmer at Dhulland Farm House, Maughold. His wife is with her Kinrade family at Peel. In 1901 they are in Arlecdon Cumberland with a brood of 7 children, all but the baby born IOM. In 1911 he is a Coal Miner Deputy age 51 with his family of 9 in 4 rooms (crowded!). He's listed in the Sep 1930 Whitehaven deaths age 71 and Ann J is in Sept 1958 Whitehaven deaths age 93.

Your last paragraph has an MI for John & Ann Corkill Ramsey, but it's another family again. In 1891 there is a family of 3 at that address, John 70 Gardener, his wife Ann 69 and daughter Louisa 23 Dressmaker, all born Maughold. In 1881 they are at the same address; John 64 Tailor, Ann 60 & Louisa Dressmaker 15. In 1871 they at at 2 Looney's Court Ramsey: John 55 laborer, Ann 52, John 10 (b Lezayre), Lucinda 5. 1861 at 1 Geary, Lezayre Ramsey: John 45 Labourer, Ann 39, Cath 5 & John 3M. I believe this will be John Corkill & Ann Quilleash md 20 May 1848 Maughold.

This has been a lot of work. I hope it's useful.
