William TAGGART of Ballakew, Malew
In Response To: Re: TAGGART & KELLY in Malew ()

Hello Frances and Averil,

Very many thanks for all your work and information about the numerous and confusing William Taggarts.

I have put together a possible lineage, but I'll be very grateful to receive corrections.
Frances, where you wrote in your first message that there is a marriage contract for Wm Taggart s/o Margt Taggart als Kelly, would you please tell us the date and which wife that is for? Because at the moment I have two William Taggarts and am unsure which one stayed at Ballakew, and which one was at Cordiman Malew.

As well as what I had before from the Creer connection, I have checked Joyce Oates's Taggart file which she compiled several years ago, mainly from the Malew and Santan parish registers and from wills, and added these to some of what you have put on the board.

There are a few major differences, and one sticking point is that William TAGGART Ballakew married [2]? Margaret KELLY on 2 Sept.1700 in Malew, according to most records. Joyce has recorded the marriage as 2 Sept.1699, but first wife Margery Taggart als Bridson was buried 30 Nov.1699, so if she is right about the 1699 this can’t be the same William Taggart!

The second difficulty is Margery's grandson William Taggart. We have assumed that he was the son of their son William, but we still have mysterious Henry unaccounted for. Assuming he was William's son, when was he born pre-Margery's death, or pre the date of her will, if this was given?

Joyce has William junr of Malew married c.1699 Isabel TAGGART (not HARRISON). Same sons as in his 1711 will. As the ref to Harrison was in 1713 could she have remarried between 1711 and 1713?

My DRAFT attempt at listing the William TAGGARTs of Ballakew:

William's will (6 March 1720/21): "William Taggart senior of BallaKew in the Parish of KK Malew" in which he "left to his five children viz., Henery, John, Eals [Alice], Ellinor, and Margery Taggart four pounds to each child". Catherine bapt Malew 16 April 1703-1774 (will), married William CREER of Ballamodda, Braddan (will 1769). If Catherine was born close to her bapt on 16 April 1703 she would have been aged only 15 at her marriage on 22 June 1718. Their first child was not bapt until 1722. William Creer’s parents John Creer and Ann STOLE endowed half their lands of Ballamodda to him by his marriage contract to Catherine Taggart. The remaining half of the property was to pass to son William on the death of the survivor of his parents.
“Braddan OD # 18 – Oct 1718 : Articles of Marriage between John Creer and Ann Creer als Stole of KK Braddan on behalf of their son William Creer and William Taggart and Margaret Taggart als Kelly on behalf of their daughter Catherine….” etc. William and Margaret Taggart gave their daughter and son in law £20 sterling.
