List of Householders in the Town of Douglas, with their names, A.D. 1730. Ed. with an introductory notice by William Harrison. In Mx Miscellanies ii, 1878. pp. 15.
It does not appear for what purpose the list was taken. In 1726 the number of souls in Douglas according to Bishop Wilson was 810.
In 1757, according to a return made by the Clergy, the number of souls was 1,516.
In 1784, there was a return of the number of inhabitants made by order of Governor Smith, by the Rev. T. W. J. Woods of Kirk Braddan : his total was 2,411.
The taking of the Census every ten years commenced in the Island in 1811. In 1851 there were in Douglas 9,880 inhabitants ; in 1861, 12,389 ; in 1871, 13,846 ; in 1881, 15,719 ; in 1891, 19,515 ; m 1901, 19,223 ; in 1911, 21,192 ; in 1921, 20,326 ; in 1931, 19,329.

A particular and very pleasing Account of the Flourishing Town of Douglas, which has long been considered as the Emporium of the Island with regard to Commerce, comprising its present state, its commodious Quay and Har bour, its new Streets, the many genteel Houses built in the modern taste, the several places of public worship, the grand new Public Library, the famous Charity School, the large new Poor-house, &c., to which is added a very curious, descriptive, entertaining, and picturesque view of the much admired seats and estates of the Nobility and Gentry in Douglas. Very useful as a view of the state of Douglas in the early part of the 19th century.

The spelling of Man with three n's is unique. The parson told the compiler that this form was decided upon after a critic had expressed to him that he ought not to use two n's in 'Mann': the parson rejoined by remarking he would use three n's if he wished.
