Re: Swimming achievements
In Response To: Re: Swimming achievements ()

Hello Sylvia,
I might be completely off base here, but it just might possibly be of some help to you.
Here goes: my paternal grandfather, James Matchett, went by the performance title of "Professor J.O. Matchett". He was the holder of over 1000 medals in long distance and fancy swimming, high diving stunts such as his famous Monte Cristo high dive in a burning turpentine soaked sack from 140 feet high from the pier head in Liverpool. He apparently travelled all over the world to entertain crowds. He was born in 1876 in Liverpool - his grandmother was Charlotte Kenna/Kennah/Kewney (spellings - see our posts on this website) from the Isle of Man. I have a photo of one of his old performance advertising posters, an old Liverpool Echo newspaper showing his pictures and a big article written about him. He was champion of Ireland, champion of England, the Mersey Mile for 12 years undefeated and many more records. He was also a champion water polo player and long distance cross country runner. He came from a poor Liverpool Irish family, the youngest child, whose father died when James was only a few months old, and his Irish mother, Letitia Matchett, worked as a charwoman. If you are interested in seeing any of these photos or written articles you can perhaps (if it is permitted to be done) post your email site so I can send the pictures and documents to you. My grandfather died before I was born, so I can only tell you what I know about him, from these old documents.
Thankyou and I hope that this may help you in your search. My photos are scanned by my Epson scanner/printer and my documents are typed in my Microsoft Word program. They are free from any viruses and are absolutely safe to open.
I live in Canada.
Kindest regards.
