Thanks Sue. I think we'll probably go for the cert for young Joseph/Horace as well as Dorothy's. Just have to know if he's related!

Donna: I'm getting a bit confused now with the Cain's.

I'm fine with Thomas's wives Elizabeth (1883-1919) and Margaret (1899-1952).
But not sure where the possibility of a wife no 1, Mary (? Murphey) comes from??

Thomas is definitely the son of John James Cain b.1849/50, Andreas and Mary (surname unknown as yet, but born about 1853 in Manchester). I have the family on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses together.

I also agree that John James Cain is likely the one on the 1851 census with mother Ann Cain. HIs father is not at home on the 1851, and he is also living with his 2 elder half brothers (both identified on the census return as "wife's illegitimate son" - nothing like saying it how it is!!) William Joyce, b. Michael age 6 and Thomas Lace, b. Michael, age 4.
I haven't yet traced any of the above on the 1861, but will keep looking, hoping that the father is at home when I enventually find them.

I'm also a bit concerned about Elizabeth/Eliza Comish/Comaish - having had another thorough look, there are a couple of other possibilities, as well as the Eliza belonging to Edward and Catherine. The ages are a little out, but one in particular looks pretty likely, just a couple of years older than we'd expect.
I'm going to go back through all the potentials and post back the info tomorrow.

I really appreciate all the interest and help.

Ellen
