Re: Corrins in the States
In Response To: Re: Corrins in the States ()

Sue,

That is fantastic ! I knew that Henry W was in the States for a time, and apparently owned or part owned a stone quarry, but I have not yet unravelled the details.

My Mother said that she remembered him when she was a small girl, as a very gentle softly spoken elderly man, which suggests that he returned to the Island. She was born in 1906, and she had a truly incredible almost photographic memory for events from when she was 2 or 3, so that would take us to 1909 or later (She remembered her brother coming into the house in Ramsey and saying the Ellan Vannin had gone down, for example !!).

I have not found his death in the States or on the Island so far, but your data put us on the right track, and confirms my mothers memories of him. I think he must have died when she was quite small, as her memories of Isabella Brown (nee Christian) who died in 1915, when she was 9, weree much more vivid. My guess would be that he died somewhere between 1909 and 1912, but that is a guess.

What is interesting is that the Peel address ties up with another memory she had. She had been told about the shop in Peel, but pointed to another building a couple of doors along and said that as a child her parents took her there, and there was an elderly lady who was some relation, but she did not know who. Presumably the other people at the property were Corrin or Joughin relations of some sort.

She also said there was a girl called May Joughin (I think I have the name right) who was related and was about10 years older than she was, so that would suggest a DoB c1896. I do not know much more about her, but I have an idea that May Joughin acted as Nanny to my mother when she was about 3 or 4. I believe that visits to relations in Peel continued until c1915, and included visiting a bed ridded elderly woman.

Its not a lot to go on, but given your incredible knowledge of every Manx person, so far as I can see, you may be able to tell me to colour of their eyes and who they sent their laundry to !!

The only other fragment I can add is that Clucas Joughin, the author of "Gorry SOn of Orry" was the son of John Joughin MHK, who was Mary Ann Joughin/Corrin's brother. Clucas Joughin and Christiana Corrin/Brown knew one another, and he wrote an entry in my Mother's scrap book when she was a child. As he emigrated to Canada (c1911 I think) it must have been shortly before he left the Island).

SOrry I don't have more to go on !

regards

Robert
