List of Wesleyan Ministers who have served on Isle of Man 1778-1886

Introduction

Prior to 1778 the Island formed part of the Whitehaven (Cumberland) circuit and was served by ministers of that circuit - Circuits are explained elsewhere - note most would stay for a 2 year (3 years after c.1840) appointment before moving elsewhere within the British Isles; some younger ministers may only be appointed for a year before finding a 'better' appointment. The 'Methodist' year began in September (though appointments would be known in July and some moves may have taken place before September) thus the indication 1812 shows that the minister stayed for the year (or part thereof) of September 1812 - August 1813; 1812-3 indicates a two year stay September 1812 to August 1814.

In 1805 the Island became a district and could appoint its own Chair and thus gained some degree of independence.

Sources

Those from 1780 - 1848 are taken from the table in chapter 7 of Rosser
Most of remainder + the brief biographical details are taken from the 1887 (16th ed.) edition of Hill's Arrangement which gives all Wesleyan Ministers and their previous circuits (if still alive); this is supplemented by Crowther's Portrait of Methodism, 1815, which gives those who have left or been expelled the Ministry.
Others are extracted from various centenary brochures etc.
It is likely that several have been missed - corrections and additions will be posted as they come to hand.

Explanation of entries

b. = born/baptised if known from other sources
c = 'circa'
e. = entered into ministry (typically this would be in early 20's)
s. = became supernumerary - i.e. was no longer paid but usually still conducted some services
d. = died (if >1888 then still shown as living in Hill 1888)

If entry has 'not in Hill1888' this often indicates that he left the ministry - e.g. in 1830/40's considerable dissent; young preachers may also have lost their vocation; others joined the established church.

More biographical detail may be available elsewhere - a full list of all personalities connected with Manx Methodism is under construction.
