Re: Edward GELLING b abt 1801
In Response To: Re: Edward GELLING b abt 1801 ()

I have just found this whole thread and am thrilled with it! Yes, Edward Gelling whose store and house were on Duke St., Douglas was first married to Jane Cannell, my gggrandmother, in Bradden 19 Feb. 1822. She had four daughters, the last being Willamena or Wilhelmina (1830-1899) who married Benjamin Lionel Burdon (1827-1891). They married in Kirkburton Parish Church, Yorkshire 18 July 1848. Perhaps that was the Burdon church, and the children of Mary Brown (second wife of Edward Gelling) with their mother were in Scotland at the time of Willamena's marriage. That would help explain why Willamena didn't marry in Braddan.

Does anyone know the connection with an Aunt Margaret Russell possibly in Yorkshire -- either through the Gellings or the Burdons?

Also does anyone know the connection with the family of Edward Frank Gelling who went to Australia with all but two of his children. They were Dan and Paul Gelling, both fairly recently buried at Marown. They were definitely connected with Elizabeth Gelling of Westview Terrace and with Rosemount Methodist Church where Richard Gelling (their uncle) was first treasurer.

Thanks very much to all those who contributed to this thread.
