Re: George Day 1841 Census.
In Response To: Re: George Day 1841 Census. ()

Hello Sean,

I was unable to find a birth registered for Phyllis under either DAY or SURPLICE in BL's registered births or on ManxBMD.com, or a marriage for Janet Campbell Surplice to any DAY in the IOM or England, so I wondered whether Phyllis was illegitimate, and Janet's years married were entered on the 1911 census form to prevent gossip from the enumerator. It was customary in the IOM for a child to be known by the father's name, whether or not married to the mother.

The name Surplice (often misspelt) is also a puzzle. They all said they were born in Ramsey in the census, yet the only ones on Brian's index were:

Male SURPLICE [born] 2 Nov 1878 Ramsey, [father] Welles SURPLICE, [mother] Agnes Jane WHITE
Janet Campbell SURPLICE 20 May 1886 Ram Welles SURPLICE Agnes WHITE
Patrick White SURPLICE 27 Nov 1879 Ram Welles SURPLICE Agnes Jane WHITE
