Re: Thomas Joughin b. 1854 Isle of Man

This is sterling work, Averil, and thank you also, Sue.

With your last two postings, at 2.21 and 3.26, I thought you had hit on the man. Most of the other postings refer to other Thomas Joughins. If Thomas James quickly moved on to America, that would explain his disappearance form NZ. That would be an easy solution. However, Thomas James, baptised at Dalby 17 Dec 1854 but from the family at Rhenab, Maughold, had a second cousin Thomas Evan Joughin, baptised at Maughold 4 Dec 1853. We can trace the Maughold man as far as the 1871 census, when he was a labourer at Rhowin, Maughold. It is possible that our shoemaker found his skills unwanted, and became a labourer, but more likely, the American labourer was the one from Maughold. Can his voyage to America in the 70s be found?

You have found plenty of good material on Rev. Thomas Alfred Joughin, of the line at Cronkbane, Bride, who was born at next-door Ballaquark. He came out to farm with his elder brother James Henry Joughin, who moved on to South Africa and ended his days at Sydney, NSW, in the Bondi area. T A entered the Wesleyan Methodist ministry. We learn something of his two marriages.

Thomas Cannell Joughin was born at Glascoe Intack, Bride in 1856. His father Robert was a tailor from the line at Crosby, Bride. TCJ’s mother Ann was also a Joughin, from the Andreas main line. Parents and children emigrated to NZ in about 1860 and built the stone house at Mt. Eden, Auckland. Alfred James Joughin was TCJ’s nephew.

William Joughin the labourer of Feilding, near Wellington, might be William Joughin the OAP who died in the Auckland area in 1922, who might be an elder brother of TCJ who otherwise disappears from the Mt. Eden story. Mary J and Margaret E were two of their sisters.

Your posting of July 19 at 11.36 p.m., Averil, emboldens William Joughin, farm labourer, 25 and his wife Sophia, née Gill, 21. That William was baptised at Michael on 25 Oct 1846, the illegitimate son of Elinor Quayle, no father’s name being given. When he married he said his father was William Joughin, labourer. The identity of William, the father, has not yet ben established. One suspect is the uncle of Thomas James Joughin, William the son’s shipmate. That uncle William had an illegitimate son William Joughin (who probably died in infancy) by Catherine Sansbury, baptised at Castletown in 1840. He eventually married Catherine at Marown in 1856. We know that he had interests in Michael, where Elinor’s offspring was being brought up by her Quayle family. If he was the father of Elinor’s child (1846), he must have taken a break from Catherine Sansbury between fathering her son (1840) and marrying her (1856).

Averil, under your details of Thomas Joughin’s immigration arrival in 1875 you have put something about Probate records. Are they something that I should be looking at?

I will look up the cemeteries, but meanwhile post this message in thanks for all the recent messages and all the research that went into them.

PS I had trouble over naughty language, which I tracked down to the word that I had used instead of "material" near the beginning of the third paragraph. It was another mass noun often used to refer to "a lot of things". As a verb one might do this to a cushion, or in a naughty sense.
