Re: Olive Qualtrough-Robert Hudgeon

Thanks to those who assisted in finding out the fate of Robert Hudgeon (h/o Olive (Kermode) Qualtough). My primary link is through Olive and it does not appear she and Robert Hudgeon had children together. Nevertheless the following, which seems to be a reasonable trail, continues to family of Robert and his children with Catherine Clague. As usual there are gaps (e.g. death date/location for Robert Hudgeon (likely Alberta) and confirmation of the parents of Catherine Clague and Robert Hudgeon (1881 Malew marriage) and who any evidence of the divorce of Olve/Robert Hudgeon and/or marriage of Robert Hudgeon to the "2nd Catherine" (although I suspect neither occurred). Let me know if you thin I have made any gross errors.

Robert Hudgeon was Baptized in Lonan, 2nd Aug 1856 the son of Willam Hutchin (a farmer) and Mary (Cannan) Hutchin of Cronk Moore Glen Drink (LDS 0106728). His grandparents were Ellinor (Quine) Hudgeon and Robert Hudgeon (Lonan Old Yard U5).

Robert Hudgeon was resident with his parents and siblings at Lonan in 1861 (age 4) and 1871 (age 14); (IOM Lonan Cenus) and at Conchan, age 24 with his sister Elizabeth (age 18) in 1881 (IOM census). On 26 July 1881, he was married (age 24) to Catherine Clague (age 23) at Malew (IGI Film 454981) [IGI states Robt was 34, however, this is likely a transcription error]

Robert and Catherine Hudgeon had children: Wiliam (1882; Douglas); Thomas Clague (1882, Lonan); Robert (1886, Lonan) Annie May (Mar 1889, Lonan; died Sep 1890); Margaret May (1891, Lonan) Charles Edwin (1893, Lonan); Ethel Maud (1896, Lonan).

Robert’s wife Catherine (Clague) Hudgeon died, at Gob-Na-Geay, Conchan on 30 Jan1900, age 42 (LDS film 454969) and was buried at Lonan, 2 Feb 1900 (Lonan Burials). In 1901 Robert (widower, age 44) is with his children: William (18), Robert (17), Thomas Clague (12), Margaret May (10), Charles Edwin (8) and Ethel Maud (5) at Crag-Na-Baa, Conchan (1901 census).

Robert Hudgeon (widower, age 48, s/o William Hudgeon) marries Olive (Kermode) Qualtrough (widow, age 44, d/o John Kermode, tailor) at Braddan on 28 April 1906 (IGI 04494860).

In 1911, Olive Hudgeon is resident with Margaret Olive Qualtrough, daughter from her first marriage at 100 Church Street, Eccles, Lancashire, England. However, in 1911, Robert Hudgeon (age 54); is resident with his two sons: William (age 27) and Robert (age 25) at Red Deer, Alberta, Canada and in 1916 (age 58) with sons William (32), Robert (30), Charles (23) and daughters Margaret (25), and Ethel (20) at Bow River, Alberta, Canada. While there is no evidence (that I have found) of the divorce of Olive and Robert; the 1916 census also includes a Catherine Hudgeon wife of Robert Hudgeon (Sr.).

Olive Hudgeon makes several trips between IOM/Liverpool and Wisconsin, USA with her daughter Margaret Olive Qualtrough who marries Henry Turville and resides until her death in Wisconsin. Olive died in Wisconson in June 1942. It appears, that shortly after their marriage in 1906, Olive and Robert go their separate ways; he to western Canada and her to Wisconsin.

Two of Robert Hudgeon’s children, Charles Edwin and Margaret May (Hudgeon) Hoy, were married and later resident in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada where they died. Charles 1 Jan 1968 and Margaret May, 25 June 1974 (B.C. vital stats; death registry). According to an article written by Margaret May; Thomas Hudgeon, drowned in a Moyie Lake B.C. in 1906. (The Delia Criagmyle Sage, 1970; provided by Lois)

Just for completeness, since I came across the information: Robert Hudgeon’s sister Eleanor married Thomas Edward Cowin (15 Aug 1868 at Lonan) and had a daughter Catherine who died in 1870 age 2); he died in Laxey in 1873. Eleanor married John Henry Caine 14 Aug 1881, Lonan.

Robert’s sister Elizabeth married John Joseph Corlett on 5 September 1885. They had a son Joshua and daughter Emily Maude, both who died May 1890, age 2 and 3 yr 11 mo. respectively; John Joseph Corlett died in April 1890. (Lonan 1871 yrd c331). Elizabeth then married Jacob Clague who died in 1945, while Elizabeth died in 1938.

Robert’s sister Frances Emily (b. abt . 1868) died in 10 Nov 1931,Lonan (1920 yd F7)
