Re: Olive Qualtrough-Robert Hudgeon

Hi David
Your track seems to follow what I am finding, but I didn't have the IGI baptism for Robert Hutchin (it is a challenge when the name keeps changing). However, I agree with the census trail you have. I had some info provided that Francis Emily was the sister of the Robert Hudgeon that married Olive Qualtrough in 1906. There is a Lonan MI for her 1920 yard F7, that says in part (am I allowed to give the whole MI?) "...Frances Emily, youngest daughter of the late William and Mary Hudgeon of North Baldrine, Lonan who departe dthis life 10th Nov. 1931, aged 63 years" So this would connect with the 1871 census you mention with her age 1 and Robert 14 and agrees with the father being William and the mother Mary. I also agree with the Mary Hudgeon of North Baldrine age 46 buried 2 Jan 1876 (Lonan Burials) as William's wife and Roberts mother. This would fit with the 1881 census with William as a widower.

You noted the 1881 census with William (60), Eleanor Cowin (30) (also a widow; and Emily (11). Also note there is a Robt. Cain, boarder, age 20. There is also an 1891 Lonan census with William Hudgeon, age 68; a retired farmer as a father-in-law to John Caine and his wife Eleanor Caine and the husbands brother Robert Caine, age 28. I haven't confirmed but it is possible that Eleanor (Hudgeon) Cowin re-married to John Caine.

Since I haven't confirmed exactly which Robt Hudgeon I'm dealing with (still not sure Olive's husband is the one that ended up in Canada); I don't have a death date/location nor any certificates, and although I have a 1942 headstone for Olive Hudgeon I haven't yet found a death certificate. The availability of death indexes and certificates is variable in Canada depending upon which province you are dealing with. Many, like Ontario only have available death searches 70 yrs and older; while here in British Columbia one can do a search 20 years and later, and with the certificate number from there I can go to the library and get the actual death certificate with many of the similar details that you can get in NSW. I find that US are the same; first challenge is to find the date/place of death and then order the certificate, unless you find a state where you can get the information on-line.

While I haven't ruled out trying to find a marriage certificate for the second Catherine in Canada, I have being focussing on confirming the paper trail in IOM/England first. If the Canada Robt Hudgeon is the one, there would be a good possibility that he didn't get divorced and didn't get married to the 2nd Catherine.

One thing that would help is if anyone has the marriage certificate information (e.g. age, parents, residence) for the Robert Hudgeon that married Catherine Clague in Malew 26 July 1881. I have a Robt Hudgeon age 24 in Conchan with his sister Elizabeth in 1881 but the IGI indicates the Robt married in Malew that same year was 34. Perhaps either the IGI is in error or there was another Robt Hudgeon who married a Catherine Clague., in Lonan or Douglas about the same time. In 1901, one year after the death of Catherine Hudgeon, Robt is 44; more consistent with the age 24, 1881 marriage date.

I'm going to see if I can find another marriage for Robert Hudgeon in Lonan or Onchan.

Thanks again for your help.
