Thank you Averil, that's really interesting. I'm hoping to be on the Island for a few days in a couple of weeks so might get a look in at the museum. Unfortunately, the name of the ship is something I don't have, and which I was hoping to find from tracking down the death certificate. Joan pointed me towards the lds centres for indexes of deaths at sea but I haven't had a chance to follow that up yet. All I have on his death, in November/December 1905, is what I posted in an earlier message (headed 'Julius Caesar Sayle'):

“About People”
“News is just to hand that James McQuiggin, junr., a sailor well known in Douglas, has been drowned in the Bay of Biscay. He leaves a wife, resident in this town.”

I would love to have more of the story.
