Re: JOUGHIN Andreas
In Response To: Re: JOUGHIN Andreas ()

Hello David,

Sorry, I don’t know which Bahy Lace married John Sayle in 1722. There is nothing in the par reg entry to identify either of them, and no place name.

Are you referring to Bahee Joughin als Lace’s agreement with her son, accepted as her will in 1747? www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/LawsonBMD/twill/1747_009.html
Bahee was the daughter of John Lace of Lower Ballaseyre, Andreas, whose will refers to legacies to Bahee from her mother and grandmother, who I haven’t found. Before 1700 married or widowed women’s wills in Andreas were usually recorded under their maiden names. Often it was only because of the names of her children that one could find out who she married. If her husband was still alive he would sometimes be named, but was often just “her husband”. Bahee Lace’s grandmother’s will could show why she had a “Right to ye profits of John Sayle's Estate of Larivane”.
Her father John Lace’s will is at: www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/LawsonBMD/twill/1701_003.html

Finding the two wills and who the mother and grandmother were is made even more difficult by the gap in the Andreas parish register between 1686 and 1704 (with few entries after 1678), so no marriages or burials within those dates. Actually you’ve reminded me that I haven’t looked for these two women in recently transcribed wills for a couple of years, during which time hundreds have been transcribed by Pat Galovich and Jim Smith. If you want to give a hand by trying to find a ref to Bahee Lace, or Bahee Joughin als Lace, and/or Larivane, please see these at: lawsonsiom.freevar.com/

There is no doubt that Bahee Lace’s husband John Joughin b.1672 died in 1709 (despite all those online trees which confuse him with the John in the other Joughin Andreas family). www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/LawsonBMD/twill/1709_000.html
Andreas confirmations 1718 have "Charles, son of John Joughin Decd". Additionally John's father Charles Joughin's will [d.1723/24] mentions the money owing from the execrs of John Joughin. Both dates were before the other John Joughin died in 1738.

DS Dugdale (Andreas expert) with whom I used to correspond said that the Joney Sayle 1734-1814 who married Andrew Joughin in 1757 was the daughter of John Sayle [will 1748], & Catharine Sayle als Moore, and granddaur of John Sayle & Alice Wade of Lary Vane. "By 1867, William Sayle, a descendant, owned the farm of Larivane of 45 acres lying to the north of the Andreas Village road junction, but he did not live in Andreas. Further descendants went to NZ and finally sold Larivane in 1930”.
