Peel Cottages - Lib Episcopi

This book has not been microfilmed - on asking for it at the Manx Museum you obtain the actual documents now bound into a series of small books dating from 1575 - William Cubbon however states that transcripts were made (and some extracts published). More importantly, unlike Lib Assed and Lib Mon there is seldom a list of all properties (except at the installation of a new Bishop a 'roll call' was often included), even changes seem to be seldom noted in the case of the four Peel properties. The property is in Jurby, German, Patrick, Marown and Braddan. Courts were held twice a year in May and October with most early courts held in Peel at the Cosnahan House which Cubbon states is at the bottom of Castle Street - I suspect he is thinking about the 29 Castle Street - however these are Lord's Rent (certainly post 1630) though Sir William Cosnohan owned one of these (it may be possible that it was transferred from Bishop to Lord as I could find no references to it post 1634).

The first group is taken from Appendix of Manorial Roll, contributed by William Cubbon - I presume by looking through the earliest book and noting the names - the order is not that used in later lists - also possible transcription error in Duncan Odenell which I think should be 4d

Cottage in Peeltowne. 8d. Sir John Quosnoghan. 1593
Cottage in Peeltowne. 4d. Ric. Seddon. 1580.
Cottage in Peeltowne. 7d. Henry Quidiacke. 1587.
Cottage in Peeltowne. 3d. John McKye. 1580.
Cottage. 3d. Duncan Odenell. 1580.
Cottage. 3d. Phillip Crosse. 1580.

The following transcription (sometimes abbreviated) are from the books 1590 to 1760.

Three lists are found early 17th Century - the 8d/16d property is subject to a query as to the correct rent - Quisnoghan is an early form of Cosnahan. Sir John was the curate (Sir being a common indication for clergymen), Sir William was his son. In all three I read Odeney and not Odenell

April 1600 -According to Cubbon this is the first court of Bishop Lloyd - hence a 'roll call' of all tenants.

The 8d/16d property seems to disappear from the record after this; nor could I find any intermediate transfers of tenancies until 1692

1692 - Peel

Henery Radcliffe 1d - Paule Gellin - in the right of the above 1d Rent falling unto Edward Cowle and with his wife hath sold the same unto the sd Paaule Gellin by Bill of Sale [suspect this is part of the 7d rent now split into a 6d and a 1d rent as a 6d rent appears 1727]
