(58 + 80) Middle (Kewaigue) Mills

From 1868 O/S Plan XIII/11- SC 361747

The water supply is from the Middle river running north west as shown on far left of plan - the leat to the newer corn mill on the north side of the bridge is taken some considerable distance to the south - the tail race runs NW to meet the Douglas river.

(58) Corn mill

The first deed mentioning this Mill is SSS Oct 1814 15

[Abbey]dated 15 Oct 1811;John Moore(Pulrose) and William Brown(millwright) - Moore gives to Brown a parcel of ground near Kewaigue Brewery bounded by sd Moore's garden on south, river on east - full breadth of Moore's garden and on west side 40 yrds north thence in direct line to river + right to and use of a sufficient road from the Castletown highway leading on westside - Brown to assign the waterfall and water descending close as well as making a tail-race thro the adj meadows of sd John Moore so as to have the sd river sufficiently and amply supply the water corn mill wch Brown engages to have built and erected - Moore to transfer to Brown the right to and benefit and advantage of all Pulrose tenantry + suit, soken and mulcture payable by tenants at present mill at Pulrose - Brown to grind and dress corn etc - to run from this date during unexpired term of Wm Coulthards lease then for 21yrs after wch the mill etc to be surrendered to Moore with all buildings etc at a suitable compensation; some conditions to hold during Coulthards lease; Witt Edward Perry, W Coulthard

Wm Brown would appear to have left the Island as in December 1825 as per CTD Mic 1826 24

dated 28 Dec 1825; William Brown proprietor of Kewague Mill Braddan appoints Daniel Stratton(farmer Braddan) as lawful attorney to sue for and recover rents of sd Mill and do all other lawful acts as I might or could do. Witt J B Clucas

with result that David Stratton borrowed money with Mill as security as per CTD Mic 1826 23

dated 20 May 1826; David Stratton(Braddan) acting as attorney for Wm Brown(engineer) proprietor of Kewague Mill acks indebted for £250(Brit) from Wm Stevenson(Douglas) acting as trustee for dau Mary Ann Stevenson and give in security Kewague water corn mill; Witt John Corkill, J B Clucas

Though the above B+S is not shown as cancelled it would seem that the money was repaid as three years later per SSS Oct 1829 28

dated 20 Aug 1829;recites William Brown(engineer, Newport, Monmouth) proprietor of a certain water corn mill at Kewague, Braddan did by deed dated 1 May 1825 give PoA to Charles Perry(Pembroke) to sell sd mill and sd Charles Perry did expose same to public auction and M H Quayle agent for Alexander Perry(Pembroke) bid £615(brit) for sd mill; Witt John Skillicorn, James Joughin?

I cannot find this earlier 1825 PoA (possibly it was an English deed accepted by Manx court) but the sale to Alexander Perry (or Perrie in some deeds), uncle to Charles, though probably intended to give financial support to nephew Charles caused some problem as though Charles sold it for £600 as per registered deed Jul 1850 #70

dated 11 Apr 1839;Charles Perry(Pembroke) sells for £600(Brit) to David Edwards(Pembroke) a water corn mill situate at Kewaigue Braddan; witt D F Wilson, William Campbell

his title must have been queried in a subsequent sale by David Edwards in 1841 as it would appear Alexander died intestate in 1837 as registered deed Jul 1850 #69 recites

dated 3 Jun 1850;recites that Alexander Perry(shopkeeper, Pembroke S Wales, now decd) was possesed of Kewaigue Mill and premises in the parish of Braddan and bequeathed same to nephew Charles Perry the younger of Pembroke but found sd premises decended to heir-at-law Charles Perry the elder(Kincardine, N Britain) who by deed released same but is now decd...; Witt Arthur Bluett, Senhouse Wilson

Registered deed Jul 1850 #68 is the sale

dated 19 Feb 1841;David Edwards(Pembroke) and Charles Perry the elder (Dumlithie, Kincardine) by his son + attorney Charles Perry (shopkeeper, Pembroke) after reciting the intestate death of Alexander Perry + release by Charles Perry senr sell Kewaigue Mill and premises in the parish of Braddan sell for £600 to Thomas S Cocks and Robert & Francis Thomas Biddulph; Witt Robert Lock (solicitor Pembroke), J Jones (his clerk)

(80) Plating Mill (later dye works):

SSS Oct 1763 46:

dated 4 Mar 1761;Robert Kermod(Middle, Braddan) + wife Patience als Moore sell for £3(Manks) + 7s ground rent to William Stowel(blacksmith, Ballasalla Malew) a small plot of land situate at north end of my great meadow at Kewaig bridge 25yrds in breadth at lower or SE end and 15yrds broad at NW end and about 40yd in length on wch Stowel or assigns is to erect a miln or otherwise an instrument wherewith to plate iron + likewise a smithy - premises adj highroad Castletown to Douglas on north and my own estate on other sides - Kermod to loop the water that runs along the hedge at the upperside of the great meadow to the damn intended to be made at upper end of sd plating miln; Witt William Cubbin, Robt Moore

There is a brief note in Larch Garrrad's version of the I.M. index - spade mill? Possibly what was considered was a water powered hammer to produce plate like objects - Manx spades would match this but many other uses would be possible with the associated smithy.

Became a dye works ; noted in a 1863 directory.

It would appear to have remained in the Stowell family until 1889 as per reg deed Mar 1892 #90

[cancelled]dated 4 Mar 1892;John Cowen(dyer, Prospect Hill Douglas) + wife Margaret ack indebted to Edward Quine(farmer, Quine's Hill, Braddan) for £120 :@ 4.5% give in security those dwelling houses, cottages and Dye Mill situate at Kewaige Braddan to which they became entitled by a deed of sale dated 4 Dec 1889 [DN May 1890 091] from Edward Clague (trustee of will of Wm Stowell decd); Redeemed 22 Mar 1933 full repayment ack'd by G B Cowen(photographer, Ramsey) [see deed for assignment history]
