[From Smith's Directory, 1889]

PORT ST. MARY, with PORT ERIN.

PORT ST. MARY is a large village about four miles west from Castletown, beautifully situated at the west side of Poolvash Bay. The name is said to be derived from a Catholic chapel dedicated to St. Mary, which formerly stood in the vicinity. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in the fishing. Here is a small harbour, well protected from the violence of the sea by a substantial stone pier, 600 feet long.
